US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed today (Friday) that they want a "sovereign" Iraq.
The State Department said, in a statement, that "Pompeo spoke with Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohamed Al-Halbousi, and they agreed on the importance of reducing tension in Iraq and the region."
"The minister expressed his appreciation for the ongoing partnership between Al-Halbousi and the United States," said Morgan Ortagos, a spokeswoman for the ministry. She
reported that Pompeo told Al-Halbousi that "the United States wants a free, sovereign and independent Iraq."
This comes in the wake of an American strike at dawn Friday at Baghdad airport, after which the commander of the "Quds Force" in the Iranian "Revolutionary Guard" Qassem Soleimani was killed, and his adviser in Iraq, the deputy head of the "Popular Mobilization Authority" Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis.
