The United Nations Mission in Iraq, UNAMI, announced, on Monday, the signing of a financing agreement with the European Union to support the electoral assistance provided by the United Nations to Iraq.
In a statement received by Mawazine News, the mission stated that it "welcomes the contribution of 5.51 million euros made by the European Union to a UN-led project to support capacity building in the Independent High Electoral Commission."
She added, "European funding will also contribute to supporting the deployment of United Nations electoral advisers at a time when the Electoral Commission is making the necessary preparations to organize the general elections in October 2021."
The statement quoted European Union Ambassador Martin Hoth as saying: "The large participation of the electorate will be essential in ensuring the existence of a parliament and government that represents all Iraqis."
She indicated, "By supporting the organization of elections, the European Union hopes to build confidence among the Iraqi people in their elections and assist the Independent High Electoral Commission in organizing a free, fair and comprehensive electoral process that deserves their trust."
She emphasized, "The European Union's contribution comes in the aid project led by the United Nations in addition to funding from Germany, the Netherlands and France, bringing the total contributions from the European Union and its member states to 18.6 million US dollars."
She explained, "On behalf of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) signed an agreement with the European Union on April 8th to organize the funding and management of the project."
