On Monday, the first deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Hakim al-Zamili, called on the Iraqi government to form a higher water authority and to address neighboring countries to increase Iraq's water quotas.
And the media office of Al-Zamili said in a statement received by Noon News Agency, that the latter hosted in his office in the House of Representatives the Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Al-Hamdani, and the advanced cadre in the ministry, to develop solutions and real treatments for the water crisis, and to discuss the ministry’s plan for the upcoming summer season, and the most important challenges in this file. .
Al-Zamili urged Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to form a "higher body to follow up and effectively manage the water file at the highest levels, as is the case in neighboring countries."
He stressed, "Direct intervention to address neighboring countries and put pressure on them to increase Iraq's water quotas and launch them in the near future."
He warned that "any negligence or delay in managing this file will result in serious consequences that threaten the lives of the Iraqi people, and harm common interests, especially economic ones, with neighboring countries."
Al-Zamili stressed "the need to move seriously to prevent the unjust depletion of the strategic water reserves by preventing abuses of water quotas in Baghdad and the rest of the provinces, activating the cooperation protocol in the Tigris River with Turkey, and establishing the joint research center to determine the water quotas of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers."
And he indicated that "hosting the Minister of Water Resources came within the framework of a serious parliamentary move to determine the causes of the crisis and ways to address them, and to provide the necessary support to the ministry, especially with regard to increasing financial allocations in the budget, which contributes to the success of managing this vital and dangerous file."
The First Deputy noted that the hosting comes after a meeting with the Turkish ambassador to Baghdad in the council building a few days ago, and will be followed by another meeting with the Iranian ambassador to discuss the regulation of the water relationship, calling for making the water file a priority for any future agreements with the relevant countries.
Iraq has been suffering for several years from a water crisis that is increasing year after year, and it has reached its most severe during the past two years after neighboring countries reduced the country's water quotas, and cut off some of the tributaries that feed the Tigris River with water.
