Iraq achieves border security with Syria and coordinates to confront cases of infiltration

Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
The Joint Operations Command confirmed the completion of the task of securing the border with Syria, pointing to the continuation of coordination to confront any infiltration attempt that might occur. This comes at a time, a strategic expert reported the end of ISIS's ability to break the borders and flow heavily through them, but he pointed to some soft sites between Nineveh and the Syrian areas adjacent to it.
The spokesman for the Operations Command, Tahsin al-Khafaji, said that "a security meeting was held at the border command headquarters with the Syrian side, which touched on responsibilities and discussed exchanging information, controlling borders and preventing any cross-border smuggling or security breaches."
Al-Khafaji added, "The meeting also discussed the capabilities and capabilities of the two sides in terms of border control, especially after the measures taken by the Joint Operations Command."
And he pointed out, "Iraq has resorted to establishing a seal, a barrier, barbed wire, watchtowers, and two defense lines, the first belonging to the border forces command and the second to the Iraqi army."
Al-Khafaji spoke about "the high capabilities of our security forces, which always thwart infiltration and smuggling operations and cut off the way for terrorists towards Iraq."
He explained, "Our forces used to launch operations through the air force inside Syrian territory in view of the proximity of the terrorist organization ISIS to our borders."
Al-Khafaji continues, "The current situation has changed, and the shift to coordination, joint action, exchange of intelligence information, and work by pursuing terrorist organizations, each in its own direction, is what is important for the two countries."
He stressed, "The continuation of efforts to secure the border strip that unites us with Syria, which is very long and extends about 610 km."
Al-Khafaji continues, "Part of these borders are with the Kurdistan region, specifically in Fishkhabour, and we have coordination with the region to secure this part."
He noted, "The work to secure these borders began more than a year and a half ago, and during this period we were able to completely close the borders and control them, in addition to the coordination that we talked about previously with the Kurdistan region, as well as with the Syrian side or the Syrian Democratic Forces through the international coalition. “.
Al-Khafaji stated, "Our current efforts ensure that there is no loophole towards Iraqi lands, and we continue to pursue any suspicious movement towards our lands in order to thwart it."
He added, "The Iraqi forces have an intelligence and security assessment of the border areas, especially with the Syrian side," stressing that "this week witnessed a clash between the forces of western Nineveh operations and the Popular Mobilization against some ISIS cells." Al-Khafaji believes, "These clashes indicate that some of the ISIS militants tried to take shelter from the urban areas of Nineveh, but these efforts were aborted through the constant pressure in the desert and geographically difficult areas."
And he added, "Our sensors confirm our possession of the ability, ability and flexibility to respond quickly to these groups, especially since they do not have high capabilities and capabilities, not in terms of armament, movement and number."
Al-Khafaji went on to say, “The battle with terrorism continues and has not ended until the present time, but the enemy is in constant losses and its elements are constantly being killed, some of them in advanced leadership positions within ISIS and suicide bombers, and our operations also contributed to obtaining a large stream of information.” about terrorist plans.
For his part, the strategic expert, Ahmed Al-Sharifi, stated that "communication with the Syrian side is a continuation of the joint operations center, which was established during the era of engagement with ISIS and also includes Iran and Russia."
Al-Sharifi added, "The aim of this communication is to counter the activities of ISIS, which are described as cross-border."
He explained, "The borders between the two countries have become secured and controlled by the forces of the two countries, but there is an effort to secure the guarantor of border security."
Al-Sharifi indicated that "this operation requires cooperation and coordination between the Iraqi forces holding the borders with their counterparts on the other side inside Syrian territory."
He pointed out, "The theory of breaking borders or passing through them no longer exists, but there are some infiltration operations that need joint coordination in order to reach the stage of mutual warning through the exchange of information."
Al-Sharifi believes that “the process of infiltration is still available, especially in areas that are classified as difficult geographically, specifically the line of contact on the border between Nineveh and the Syrian side, as this area is still not controlled in a reassuring way.”
He added, "The border forces are responsible for this file, but this is done through coordination with the decision center in both Iraq and Syria until the political decision supporting military activities is prepared." Al-Sharifi concluded, “The international coalition also has a role through the joint forces, and the United States of America as a strategic ally of Iraq, as a strategic ally of Iraq, is present on the security and military levels.”
The terrorist organization ISIS had taken control of a number of provinces in 2014, and before that it had controlled areas inside Syrian territory and had been moving between the two countries comfortably before being exposed to great losses in battles that bore the bulk of its Iraqi leadership.
