Representatives are seeking to legislate a law to empower the opposition in parliament, and also allow them to form a shadow government that would help evaluate executive performance and diagnose mistakes.
Representative Amer Abdel-Jabbar said, "A letter I submitted to Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi during the first session of the current legislative term amending the Parliament law and its formations."
Abdul-Jabbar added, “The amendment I proposed includes adding the term opposition to the law,” pointing out that “Iraqi law is devoid of the concept of opposition.”
He pointed out, "The current will comes to place the concept of opposition within Iraqi legislation, starting with the law of the House of Representatives and its formations, until it is recognized."
And Abdul-Jabbar stated, "Our demands did not stop to this extent. Rather, we want to empower this opposition by giving it the presidency of important committees, including the presidency of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, the Finance Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Ministerial Curriculum Monitoring Committee."
And he stressed, “the need for the opposition bloc to obtain the position of deputy speaker of the House of Representatives with the formation of a shadow government, which is an ineffective experience in Iraq.”
And Abdul-Jabbar stated, “This mechanism will ensure the presence of a shadow minister for every minister in the government within the executive authority, and follow up on his work and performance.”
He noted, "The shadow government will be ready if the actual government is exposed to any vibrations, or if it submits its resignation or withdraws confidence from it."
And Abdul-Jabbar continues, “There are few who join the opposition at the present time, and we are trying in our proposals to win over the parties involved in forming the government.”
And Abdul-Jabbar went on to say, “Our role in the opposition is to evaluate performance, constructive approaches, and support successful ministers, and we support the government’s plans to combat corruption.”
For her part, MP Sarwa Abdel-Wahed stated that "the opposition inside parliament must be able to fully perform their duties."
And Abdel Wahed continued, “This is by allowing them to chair committees affecting legislative and oversight work and not sharing them among the big powers.”
She pointed out that “the opposition MPs want to do their best in order to evaluate the executive performance and diagnose errors in order to address them.
