"No objection" and "residence" threaten the future of 700-800 students for postgraduate studies in Iran

Despite their official and smooth entry without a visa, according to the agreement concluded between Iraq and Iran, about 700-800 Iraqi students for postgraduate studies at the University of Religions and Denominations in the holy city of Qom face problems related to not granting them a study visa and delaying the organization of residency that threatens their academic future in obtaining a certificate higher.
The students appealed to the government and the Ministries of Higher Education and the Interior to take urgent action to coordinate with the Iranian side to end their suffering regarding residency procedures and the so-called “no objection” that prevents them from obtaining a study visa. At the same time, they criticized the weak role of the cultural attachés in following up and solving their problems.
The Ministry of Higher Education requires a residence period of four months for humanities and 6 months for scientific majors for students studying abroad, as follow-up after the end of the study period is limited to the stamps in their passports, but the Iranian side requires them to obtain a study visa and residence visa in procedures described as complex by students.
A group of students said in private conversations with Al-Sabah: They began studying at the University of Religions and Doctrines since 2020 and 2021, as it was recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and students were accepted and paid the tuition fees required by the university.
They added that the Ministry of Education, after a while, revoked the recognition of a group of Iranian universities, including the University of Religions, as it issued a new scholarship guide for students, but with the consideration of our academic certificates and new instructions in this regard.
They explained that despite their studies since the aforementioned period and before the revocation of recognition, they have not been granted a study visa until now due to the delay in issuing what is known as (no objection) by the Iranian Ministry of Science, as the university promised them to solve the issue over and over again, but that did not happen until now.
They emphasized that residence procedures for students are routine and complex and require at least 20 days to obtain the required stamps, and this applies to most students who suffer from these procedures.
The students called on the government and the Ministries of Higher Education and the Interior to move urgently to solve their problems due to the weak role of the cultural attachés in following up on these problems that threaten their academic future, as they have reached advanced stages of study, but these problems
prevent completion.
At the beginning of this week, Al-Sabah contacted the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to convey the voice of the students, as he requested that the appeal be sent via “WhatsApp” in order to deliver it to the concerned authorities and know the circumstances of this case and verify it. Contacted him again to follow up on the case file, but to no avail.
