The Kurdistan region stands on the threshold of holding elections for its parliament, which have been stalled for a long time, due to an internal political conflict that cast a shadow over the economic and social situation, and turned into a challenge that required UN and international intervention, to end up with an attempt to introduce the federal government as a mediator, in light of successive turns. The Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc asked the Presidency of the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region to set a date for the parliamentary elections in Kurdistan, but this request came in a charged political atmosphere in a multifaceted dispute between the Democratic Party on the one hand and its opponent the Kurdistan Union and its other blocs and parties, on the other hand.
The head of the Political Council of the Kurdistan Islamic Union, Khalil Ibrahim, said, in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "We are very keen that the elections take place on time, and we were not satisfied with extending the life of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament for a full year," noting that the party "has taken a decisive position on In order to consolidate democracy and hold elections, as it is a popular entitlement. Ibrahim added, "Voters always vote for a four-year parliamentary session, and that is why we announced, in protest against the position of extending our resignation from Parliament," pointing out that their partners "in the Islamic Union Bloc also submitted their resignations to highlight the seriousness in holding elections on time."
Regarding other political positions, Ibrahim said: "The Democratic Bloc's submission of the request to hold elections came to absolve itself of the disruption of political life. It is the duty of Parliament to prepare for this matter and it is very necessary," noting that "confidence must be renewed for the Board of Commissioners, as it has expired, but The matter has another complication, which is the lack of a commission that enjoys legitimacy and legal capacity, and without a commission, elections cannot be held, unless the Federal Election Commission is invited to supervise the elections in Kurdistan.
For his part, a member of the National Union, Rizan Sheikh Dalir, said that "the Democratic request represents the bloc only," adding that "the other blocs submitted the same request and also included the necessity of amending the election law and electing a new council for the Electoral Commission, which are demands that the Democrat did not implement."
Dler questioned, in an interview with "Al-Sabah", the seriousness of the Democratic request, and said: "I do not expect that they are serious about holding elections at this time, and I do not imagine that there is an agreement between all Kurdish parties in the region to hold elections within the region." As for a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Wafaa Muhammad, he expressed his regret, in an interview with "Al-Sabah", about some of the arguments for not holding the elections, despite the fact that international demands have increased on the forces of the region for the need for a final agreement to hold the elections announced next November.
While the expert in the electoral field, Hawri Tawfiq, said: "The legal mandate of the Council of Commissioners in the Kurdistan region has ended, and today we are faced with two options, either for the Kurdistan Parliament to extend the legal mandate of the Commission in the region or for a decision by the Federal Court to dissolve the Kurdistan Parliament."
Tawfiq added, to "Al-Sabah", that "the implementation of the second option would mean resorting to the Independent High Electoral Commission forcibly," noting that "the call for elections in the current form of the situation is devoid of constitutional and legal conditions, and it is a useless media phenomenon," as he put it.
And he continued, "Based on the Federal Court's decision in response to the complaint regarding the unconstitutionality of the Election and Referendum Commission in the Kurdistan region, the region's right to the existence of the Kurdistan Election Commission has been confirmed, but it is supervised by the Independent High Commission for Federal Elections, and the constitutional and legal debate in this regard has ended." .
