On Friday, the head of the Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, called for work to develop parliamentary activity, noting that Iraq had succeeded in overcoming many remnants of the authoritarian dictatorship for decades.
Al-Hakim said in a statement: "On the International Day of Parliamentary Work, we stress the importance of parliaments in promoting freedoms and human rights and achieving social progress, in addition to being one of the most important features of democracy, and its influence is a basic indicator of the extent to which countries are democratic or not."
He added, "On this occasion, we refer to Iraq's important democratic experience in parliamentary work, and its success in overcoming many remnants of authoritarian dictatorship for decades. We call on the country's legislative institution and all relevant academic institutions to work on developing parliamentary work and activity as an institution and as individuals."
