The Ministries of Water Resources and Agriculture and the Japanese Organization (JICA) organized a conference on how to manage water and deal with it in light of the scarcity crisis and discuss the use of modern methods in agriculture, most notably the formation of water user associations with the adoption of a laser leveling machine and a fertilized seed.
On the sidelines of the conference, Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, told Al-Sabah: The Ministry of Resources is working in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the JICA organization to follow modern methods in agriculture and irrigation by forming associations and setting a specific goal to cover lands by applying the so-called (water users) model. .
He added that this is a modern method that enables an increase in the cultivated area, in addition to saving large amounts of water and reducing damage to agricultural crops through the use of laser technology in the agricultural process and enhancing agricultural production, not to mention rapid growth and increased immunity against agricultural pests. Diab pointed to the necessity of spreading water user associations and adopting simple and inexpensive techniques that had a significant impact on the agricultural process in several countries.
In turn, the Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mithaq Abdul-Hussein, explained that the ministry is seeking, in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and JICA, to take urgent decisions to adapt to drought and use technologies that are in line with the conditions of the country and are in force in most countries, including Japan.
He pointed out that JICA presented a successful model through the formation of water user associations, as the Ministries of Resources and Agriculture will adopt this model in order to spread it to be optimal for the coming years, and there will be direct support for these associations and their subscribers from the government.
For his part, the Japanese ambassador to Iraq, Futoshi Matsumoto, confirmed in a speech during the conference that Japan has been applying the water user associations model with the laser leveling machine in agriculture for more than 130 years and is working to transfer these methods to Iraq, presenting at the same time a set of manuscripts that It explains the mechanism of action of that system, which has shown its efficiency since that time and is still used until now.
And he indicated that JICA experts have been working since 2017 to find a new way to manage the water file on the agricultural side with the aim of increasing yields with the least possible amount of irrigation, pointing out that the agricultural system in Iraq suffers from excessive water use and inefficiency in agricultural production, as well as Confronting drought and scarcity.
