Recently, a noticeable escalation has been observed in the phenomenon of converting agricultural lands into residential lands, especially in the capital, Baghdad. The Baghdadi countryside has declined significantly and turned into unserved neighborhoods or slum areas. This shift comes in the context of increasing population and rising housing prices.
Thaer Makhif al-Jubouri, a member of the Agriculture Committee in Parliament, attributes this phenomenon to a lack of planning and illegal exploitation. In this context, Al-Jubouri points out the involvement of partisan interests in exploiting agricultural lands. He points out that it is possible to search for desert areas for reclamation and expansion instead of converting agricultural lands into residential areas.
On the other hand, Tahseen Al-Moussawi, an agricultural expert, emphasizes the importance of green places surrounding cities. Although there are laws that deal with this problem, they are not adequately enforced. He points out that agricultural land can be reclaimed under the law and returned to its previous agricultural use. Al-Moussawi shows the importance of these lands in purifying the environment and providing oxygen, and negative transformation leads to harmful environmental effects and an increase in diseases.
Reports indicate that the conversion of agricultural lands into residential areas has caused the extinction of the agricultural suburbs around Baghdad, and they have become an irreplaceable part of the greater city of Baghdad. Although there are laws that address this problem, they are not seriously implemented. The concerned authorities must carry out the necessary planning and legislation to preserve these green spaces and agricultural lands.
In general, this problem still requires attention and efforts to preserve green places and agricultural lands and limit their conversion to residential places, according to what was published in the official newspaper.
