    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (November 11, 2023), the Parliamentary Civil Society Organizations Committee commented on the contribution of civil society organizations to spreading the culture of combating and exposing corruption in Iraq, while noting the presence of some organizations that have suspicious activities and cultures that are alien to Iraqi society.
Committee member Jassem Atwan told “Baghdad Today” that “there are civil society organizations that had an important role in spreading the culture of combating and exposing corruption in Iraq, and these organizations also had a role in the issue of exposing corruption files before public opinion, which prompted the competent authorities to To move towards those files, investigate them and take action on them.”
He added, "At the same time, there are some civil society organizations that do not have any activities, and some organizations have suspicious activities by spreading some cultures alien to Iraqi society, and for this there must be strict control over the work and activities of civil society organizations, as this matter is dangerous and must not be Absolutely ignore it.”
According to Yonadam Kanna, head of the “Civil Society Institutions and Parliamentary Development Committee” in the House of Representatives at the time, “there are more than 7,000 civil society organizations in Iraq, including 4,000 registered with the government, all of which were established in the period after the American occupation of Iraq.”
Of the 7,000 civil society organizations in Iraq that were established after the US occupation of the country in 2003, there are about 4,000 organizations registered with the Iraqi government’s Department of Non-Governmental Organizations in Baghdad, while others operate without a license and their sources of funding are not known.
But in general, a small number of these organizations, which are spread across their headquarters in the various cities and governorates of Iraq, actually undertake to perform the tasks that are at the forefront of their declared program within society, while the majority of them side with activities of a courtesy nature to the authorities and the main parties, in addition to influential armed factions in the country. . According to observers.
