    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (March 12, 2024), the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee commented on the impact of ending the international coalition’s mission in Iraq on the relationship with the NATO mission during the next stage.
Committee member Yasser Watout said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the Iraqi government is determined, with great political and parliamentary support, to end the mission of the international coalition in Iraq during the next stage, so there is no need for this coalition,” stressing that “this matter will not affect Iraq’s relationship with the mission.” "NATO".
Wattut stated that "the NATO mission is present in Iraq, with the approval and knowledge of the government, and it came at an official Iraqi request, and its mission is limited, which is training and developing the combat capabilities of the security forces," explaining that "when the need for this mission is over, work will be done to complete its mission."
He continued, "The mission does not have any military or security activities, unlike the tasks of the international coalition, which has become a threat to Iraq's security and stability."
The National Security Advisor, Qasim Al-Araji, confirmed on Monday (March 11, 2024) that ending the international coalition’s mission will not affect the relationship with the NATO mission in Iraq.
A statement from the National Security Advisory, received by “Baghdad Today,” stated that Al-Araji “received, in his office today, Monday, a delegation representing the NATO Council, which included the ambassadors of Germany, the Netherlands, and Italy in the alliance, in the presence of the ambassador of the NATO mission in Iraq, Ronald Solemnaz, and the meeting discussed "Discussed the development of cooperation relations between Iraq and NATO, especially in the field of training and developing the capabilities of Iraqi forces."
Al-Araji stressed, "Iraq's relationship with NATO is an important, fundamental, and strategic relationship that has included years of joint cooperation and work with the Ministries of Defense and Interior, praising the growing relationship with the alliance and the training capabilities it has provided to raise the capabilities of the Iraqi forces."
Al-Araji also pointed out, “Iraq is looking forward to more joint cooperation between the NATO mission and the Iraqi Ministries of Defense and Interior, praising at the same time the relationship with the European Union Advisory Mission,” stressing “Iraq’s endeavor to establish a long-term relationship between the two sides.”
Al-Araji explained, “Ending the mission of the international coalition will not affect the relationship with the NATO mission in Iraq,” pointing out that “Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani has directed that all requirements of the security services be met,” noting that “Iraq’s demand to end the mission of the international coalition "It came after the justifications for its existence had ended."
