    Undersecretary for Gas Affairs, Izzat Saber, said, “The gas investment sector is witnessing growth and an increase in the quantities of associated gas investment, as the amount of gas invested has reached more than (1916) cubic meters per day, which constitutes more than (61%) of the amount of gas produced, which amounts to 3120 mqmq (million standard cubic feet per day).




    Alsumaria News is conducting a digital review and comparison, to verify the “logical” extent of these numbers and the statement issued by the Ministry of Oil, as it turns out that there are two strange numbers in the story.

    First of all, the volume of associated gas is related to the volume of oil production, meaning that the greater the production of oil, the greater the production of associated gas and vice versa. For example, the production of associated gas in Iraq decreased in 2020 to 28 billion cubic meters, compared to 2019. In which production reached 32 billion cubic meters, as a result of the decrease in oil production due to the Corona closure.



    *How did associated gas production increase while oil decreased?!

    In 2022, Iraq's oil production was 4.4 million barrels per day, of which it produced more than 2,900 mqm of associated gas (invested and burned) per day.

    While Iraq's oil production currently amounts to 4 million barrels of oil per day, the Ministry of Oil says that the total associated gas production reached 3120 mqm per day! This is a strange matter, as it requires Iraq's current oil production to be more than 4.7 million barrels per day in order to be able to achieve this production. Quantity of associated gas.


    *Another strange number!

    The Oil Ministry’s statement included another strange number, represented by the volume of “invested” gas out of the total associated gas, which, according to the Oil Ministry’s statement, amounted to 1,916 cubic meters per day.

    But even a few months ago, the total gas produced was 2,800 cubic meters, of which 1,500 cubic meters were invested, and 1,300 cubic meters were burned, which raises questions about how the invested gas “jumped” from 1,500 cubic meters to more than 1,900 cubic meters per day, meaning that it rose by 400 cubic meters. Daily, or at a rate exceeding 26%, while the completion of none of the projects to stop the burning of associated gas has been announced, which are still in place and are being worked on and have not been completed yet, and it is assumed that they require 3 to 5 years to be completed.
