Planning: Markets are “stable” and food security has improved due to the food basket

The Ministry of Planning stated that government measures have contributed to achieving food security, most notably the provision of the food basket, while specialists believe that Iraqi markets are witnessing a clear stability in the prices of basic food items that citizens need on an ongoing basis.
Iraq has sufficient food stocks that will suffice for several months to come, in light of the continuation of contracts with international companies supplying food items, as Iraq was not included in the global statistics of countries suffering from inflation in food prices, according to the Ministry of Trade.
The number of beneficiaries of the food basket reached about 41 million and 553 thousand citizens, in all governorates, including the Kurdistan Region.
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told Al-Sabah: “The level of food security in Iraq has witnessed a tangible improvement over the past two years, as a result of many factors, including government measures and policies in terms of improving the standard of living of the poor, whether through the social protection network by increasing the number of those covered, or including new segments, not to mention the availability of the food basket, which has led to consumer reassurance and stability in food prices in general
in the country.” He added that there are other factors related to meeting the local need for wheat production and securing food imports at official prices without being affected by the parallel price, accompanied by a noticeable improvement in the standard of living of the individual in Iraq.
As for the researcher in economic affairs, Suhad Al-Shammari, she explained to Al-Sabah that “Iraqi markets are witnessing a wide turnout to purchase food items with the approach of the month of Muharram Al-Haram,” explaining that “the Ministry of Trade has supported the Iraqi citizen with a comprehensive food basket to avoid price increases and to limit the greed of some merchants who try to raise the price of food items on these occasions.”
She explained that the basket worked to create harmony between the local market and the needs of the Iraqi individual, noting that "the Iraqi markets are witnessing clear stability in prices during this period despite the wide demand for purchasing food items." Al-Shammari revealed the existence of "a clear government effort to protect the local market from price fluctuations, especially
the poor class."
