    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, Abbas Al-Jubouri, commented today, Wednesday (July 17, 2024), on the decision to appoint Mohammed Al-Hassan from the Sultanate of Oman as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), succeeding Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.
Al-Jubouri told Baghdad Today, "Al-Hassan cannot be evaluated before he officially begins his duties, and then his performance will be evaluated, and he will certainly be evaluated by the Iraqi government as well as by the Iraqi Council of Representatives through its specialized committees."
He explained that "there are many comments on the work, performance and movements of Plasschaert, and we hope that Al-Hassan will not repeat those mistakes, especially since the role of the mission is very temporary and Iraq does not need such a mission after the political, governmental, security and societal stability, and we, as a monitoring body, will certainly follow the movements of the new head of the UN mission."
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Monday (July 15, 2024) the appointment of Mohammed Al-Hassan of the Sultanate of Oman as his new Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). He succeeds Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of the Netherlands.
Al-Hassan brings to the position a broad range of diplomatic experience with a career spanning more than thirty years in preventive diplomacy, peacebuilding and development, according to a statement issued by UNAMI.
Al Hassan most recently served as the Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York (since 2019). Prior to that, he held various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Muscat, including Acting Undersecretary for Diplomatic Affairs (2016), Head of the Diwan (2015), and Head of the Minister’s Office Department (2012).
Among his many high-level positions, Al Hassan has served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Sultanate of Oman to the Russian Federation and concurrently as Non-Resident Ambassador to Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia and Moldova. He previously served as Deputy Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations in New York. Prior to that, he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations in Geneva.
Al-Hassan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, a Master of Science in International Relations from St. John’s University in New York, USA, and a PhD in Economics from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics ( MESI ). He speaks Arabic, English, Norwegian and Russian.
