The rate of electricity production is less than the rate of population growth, and there is a second reason, which is also an important factor leading to the insufficiency of the electricity produced to meet the need, which is excessive consumption.
For more than two decades, successive governments in Iraq have been trying to address the deep-rooted electricity crisis, and the closer they get to the appropriate treatment, the medicine fades away, so the crisis continues. This comes in light of the increasing rates of demand as a result of the steady population increases, which means that the rate of electricity production is less than the rate of population growth. There is a second reason, which is also an important factor leading to the insufficiency of the electricity produced to meet the need, which is excessive consumption. This excess may be the result of three factors: the first is the cheap prices of energy units supplied to citizens or commercial units, which encourages indifference in consumption, far from rationalization and rationing, and the second is linked to the first, which is weak collection, and as a result, the Ministry of Electricity has large debts, some of which are owed to government institutions, which forces the government to compensate for those debts with more allocations The Ministry of Electricity and the government were subjected to a torrent of accusations and negative positions, politically and popularly, and accused of being unable to provide electricity in a manner commensurate with the size of the financial allocations. The third factor is the emergence of random gatherings, which expanded at the expense of the capacity of services and infrastructure, most notably electricity.
In light of this complex scene, the government is trying to find unconventional solutions that can contribute to bridging or narrowing the gap in the growing demand for electricity. Among these attempts are attracting large international companies in the field of electric power, giving them good investment space, working on implementing projects, and moving towards complex stations. Here come the electrical interconnection projects with neighboring countries and through them to other countries, to represent an important step to increase production capacities and improve the level of supplied energy. The quantities of energy supplied through the interconnection processes may not be large, but it is certain that they will contribute to achieving clear stability in the electric current, in addition to providing a state of guarantee for the sustainability of energy in the event of exceptional circumstances in Iraq. It is certain that the entry into force of the electrical interconnection, with Turkey and through it with European countries, which guarantees the provision of 300 megawatts, will cover the needs of three governorates, and before that the interconnection with Jordan by 40 megawatts, and after that the interconnection with the Gulf countries will come. There is no doubt that it will contribute to increasing the supplied energy, but it is also certain that it is not sufficient, as addressing the electricity crisis requires many measures, not limited to increasing Production, improving transportation and distribution networks, and achieving international connectivity, but we need to control the import of electrical appliances and ensure that they meet special specifications, and pay attention to the quality of building materials, and their thermal insulation, and before that, move towards regulating consumption through the smart equipment method, because electricity has become the lifeblood.
