    Baghdad/Al-Masala:
The phenomenon of drug trafficking and abuse in Iraq is witnessing a significant increase, especially among the youth, as this phenomenon has become a serious threat to society.
Perhaps prisons are one of the most prominent environments that contribute to the spread of this phenomenon. Instead of being centers for reform and rehabilitation, they have become a fertile ground for drug dealers, and an environment in which prisoners are exposed to involvement in this dark world.
A report indicates that most prisoners enter on charges not related to drugs, but they quickly become part of this world after entering prison. These prisons are controlled by very large mafias, controlled by certain parties, as there are halls that no one is allowed to enter, in addition to the large overcrowding inside the prisons contributing to the loss of control. In halls designated for 50 prisoners, you may find more than 200 prisoners, which increases the spread of the phenomenon in these closed environments.
Iraq: From a crossing to a consumer
In the last two decades, Iraq has transformed from a transit country for drugs to a consumer country, as reports from specialists indicate that drug trade and abuse in the country have reached unprecedented levels.
The serious problem prompted the Iraqi parliament to take action through amendments to the anti-drug law, but so far, there are no official statistics published on the number of drug users in the country. However, the size of the problem can be estimated from media and field reports that indicate a significant increase in the number of drug users, especially among young people.
The head of the Parliamentary Anti-Narcotics Committee, Adnan Burhan Al-Juhaishi, confirmed that there are amendments underway to the Anti-Narcotics Law, but the Council of Ministers withdrew the law for review and amendment despite the Judicial Council’s approval of it. The law includes several main axes aimed at reducing this dangerous phenomenon:
Preventive axis: This is one of the most important axes, as it includes holding recreational councils for young people to stay away from cafes and places where drug users gather. Specialists indicate that providing healthy recreational alternatives for young people may help reduce their involvement in drug use.
Therapeutic Axis: This involves improving treatment and rehabilitation clinics and providing them with the necessary equipment and psychiatrists. This axis is very important to ensure adequate support for addicts who wish to quit this habit.
Judicial axis: It is based on amending the penalties against drug dealers, especially international dealers, whose penalty will be the death penalty, while other penalties will be determined based on the seriousness of the crime. This legislative approach reflects the authorities’ determination to deal firmly with this phenomenon.
Reasons for the spread of the phenomenon among young people
Multiple reports indicate that the main reason behind the spread of drugs among young people in Iraq is due to several factors, most notably the increasing unemployment rates among young people, as many of them find themselves in a state of loss and despair, which prompts them to resort to drugs as an escape from reality.
Open borders allow large quantities of drugs to enter Iraq, making the country a target market for international drug traffickers.
    Available statistics
Although there are no recent official statistics on the number of drug users in Iraq, estimates suggest that the numbers are on the rise. According to press reports, the number of people arrested on drug-related charges has exceeded tens of thousands in recent years, highlighting the scale and severity of the phenomenon in Iraqi society.
