Iraq faces a complex problem related to the expected Israeli response to Iran. While the Hezbollah Brigades threatened the Gulf States if they allowed their airspace to be opened to Israeli aircraft to strike Iran, what might happen is that Iraq’s airspace itself would be used to strike Iran.

Reuters quoted three Gulf sources as saying that Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, refused to allow Israel to fly over their airspace for any attack on Iran, and conveyed this to Washington.

The Gulf source told Reuters, "The Gulf states do not allow Israel to use their airspace, and will not allow Israeli missiles to pass through, and there is also hope that they will not strike oil installations."

The three Gulf sources confirmed that Israel may launch its strikes through Jordan or Iraq, but using Saudi, Emirati or Qatari airspace is out of the question and strategically unnecessary.

Not only has Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq threatened, but Iran has also seriously threatened to treat any country that opens its airspace to Israel as an enemy.

While the doors of the Gulf skies have been closed, Israeli aircraft may only have Iraqi airspace left, leaving Iraq in a very embarrassing position, as it does not have anything that can shoot down or hit Israeli aircraft, and cannot even refuse to use its airspace.

Analysts also pointed out that Israel has other options, including mid-air refueling capabilities that would enable its aircraft to fly across the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, then head to the Gulf and back.
