The American “Washington Institute” discussed the dangers of what it called the “energy war” that armed Iraqi factions threatened against Arab countries, especially the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, in the event that Israel attacks Iran’s energy infrastructure.
The translated American report indicated that “these threats are messages from Tehran to Washington and would constitute an embarrassment to the Iraqi government if carried out.”
He stated that in order to justify such potential attacks, the Iraqi “resistance factions” launched a smear campaign against some Arab countries, especially the UAE and Saudi Arabia, through a discourse aimed at portraying such countries as complicit in supporting Israel, which paves the way for these factions to justify their potential future attacks against their vital energy facilities.
After the report pointed out that such threats from Iraqi factions began to appear and recur since the Iranian missile attack on Israel on October 1, and Israel’s threat to target the Iranian energy sector, it explained that on October 13, the “Jerusalem Cry Brigades,” which it described as a group affiliated with the Harakat al-Nujaba militia and was previously known as “Ashab al-Kahf,” published a video threatening to attack the energy infrastructure in several Arab countries.
The report continued that the video referred to these sites as “the Arab economic resources that support the malicious Zionist entity,” adding that “we will have our share in stopping this support and cutting off energy exports.”
The same video showed a map showing the following targets: Jebel Ali Port (Dubai), “Manama Isa Port” in reference to Salman Port in Bahrain, the Jordan River Crossing, in addition to two gas facilities in Saudi Arabia and the Aramco gas facility.
The report stated that a day before the publication of this video, the head of the executive council of the Al-Nujaba Movement, Nazim Al-Saidi, issued similar threats on television, warning that “the Iraqi resistance will target energy centers if Iranian oil facilities are bombed.”
According to the report, “Kata’ib Hezbollah” is considered the first Iraqi faction to escalate the “energy war” rhetoric, explaining that “Abu Ali al-Askari” published a message on the Telegram application on October 3, which stated that “if the energy war begins, the world will lose 12 million barrels of oil per day, and as Kata’ib Hezbollah said previously, either everyone enjoys the good or everyone is deprived.”
The report added that after this threatening message, the group’s Secretary-General, Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi, published a statement that included harsh language against some Arab governments. He said, “All forms of evil, barbarism, and criminality have been embodied on the enemy front, exceeding all limits of human imagination, with the direct and effective participation of evil America and its Western allies, and with the support of the Sisi regime, the malicious Jordanian regime, the Saudi entity with its Wahhabi institutions, and the Emirati regime. The actions of these people will be etched in the memory of the nation, producing a volcano of anger and revenge that cannot be stopped.”
The report indicated that “Abu Ali al-Askari” later published another statement in which he renewed his threats about the “energy war” and attacking Arab governments, saying, “In principle, we will not start a war in the energy field, but if it starts, the world will lose 12 million barrels of oil per day, and this is what we will manage, God willing. As for what the Yemeni brothers will do in Bab al-Mandab, and the Iranian brothers in the Strait of Hormuz, God knows best.”
He continued by saying that what he described as “evil regimes” include what the Secretary-General mentioned in his last statement, namely the Sisi regime, the Jordanian regime, the Saudi entity with its Wahhabi institutions, and the Emirati regime.
The US report warned that Hezbollah Brigades had previously launched “attacks on Gulf targets using the pro-Iranian group ‘Brigades of Promise of Truth’, which threatened to launch attacks against US bases in the Gulf on October 24, 2023. It also carried out attacks against energy infrastructure in the Gulf from Iraq, targeting, for example, Saudi targets in May and September 2019.”
The report concluded by saying that the current threats were likely launched by Harakat al-Nujaba and Kataib Hezbollah on behalf of the IRGC’s Quds Force, adding that Iran is using the Iraqi militias as a tool to send a message to the United States and other powers that an Israeli strike on Iranian oil infrastructure could have destabilizing effects without Tehran having to violate the non-aggression pact it concluded with Saudi Arabia last year with Chinese mediation.
The report concluded that launching drones and cruise missiles from Iraq could cause serious damage to one or two Arab oil sites, although its impact would be limited compared to a strict attack by Iran, which could embarrass the fragile Iraqi government and put more pressure on it.
