Toronto Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins opts for ‘several pieces instead of one’ in bypassing Edwin Encarnacion

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The way Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins sees it, swinging and missing on Edwin Encarnacion doesn’t mean a strikeout for the team’s off-season plans.
When the popular Encarnacion rejected a four-year, US$80-million contract offer in November, Plan B went into effect for Blue Jays management.
The latest move in that strategy was Monday’s signing of the versatile Steve Pearce, an able body but one that has yet to be an everyday player in the major leagues.

Steve Pearce’s versatility gives Blue Jays manager John Gibbons some defensive options.
The Jays hardly broke the bank on Pearce, who signed a two-year, $12.5-million deal, largely as a complement to Kendrys Morales, who joined the team on a three-year, $33-million deal.
Neither player equates joy for Jays fans nor fear for opposing pitchers the way Encarnacion did.

“I felt like (Encarnacion) could have been a part of this and there is a small chance that he still could be, but we also feel confident that we are going to be able to be able to build a very good team around the core that we have and the addition of the two (recent) signs,” Atkins said Monday.

“We would have felt great about adding Edwin. But as it stands right now, alternatively, we feel like we are building a team that has just as good of a chance to win with several pieces instead of one.”
