Ottawa Senators' Mike Hoffman gets two games for cross-check to Couture's head

Hoffman received a two-game suspension from the National Hockey League for cross-checking Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks in the back of the head during the Sharks’ 4-3 shootout win on Wednesday.
The Senators, who are carrying a three-game losing streak into Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils, will be without Hoffman for both games this weekend.
After playing the Devils on Saturday, the Senators travel to Brooklyn for Sunday’s game against the New York Islanders.
Hoffman, who has nine goals and 12 assists in 28 games, will be eligible to return for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

In addition to losing two games, Hoffman will also be fined $57,638 — the equivalent of two games salary — with the cash forwarded to the NHL’s Players Emergency Assistance Fund.
While Hoffman was at Senators practice Friday and took part in a 12:30 phone interview with the NHL’s department of player safety, he left the Canadian Tire Centre before the ruling was handed down and was unavailable for comment.
The fact he was suspended is not a surprise. The only question was how long the suspension would be.
Couture, speaking to reporters in Montreal before the punishment was handed down, suggested the league should hit Hoffman hard.
“I’m extremely lucky I’m not very, very badly hurt — it looked like he intended to injure me,” said Couture, a former captain of the Ottawa 67’s.
He says he was “stunned” by what happened.
“I’ve never said a word to that guy in my life,” Couture said. “I didn’t hit him at all during the game. I mean, I shoved him at the entry there and I was going to the net to look for someone to pick up, and the next thing you know, I’m getting hit in the back of the head.”
Hoffman received a major penalty and game misconduct for his stickwork during Wednesday’s game, but the officials missed Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s spearing attempt at Senators captain Erik Karlsson. Vlasic was fined $5,000 on Friday, but he received no suspension.
With Hoffman out of the lineup, the Senators could recall Casey Bailey from the Binghamton Senators for Saturday’s game. Bailey has nine goals and five assists in 25 games with Binghamton. He has scored one goal in six career NHL games with Toronto.
Senators coach Guy Boucher will also re-shuffle his forward lines and power-play units to fill the Hoffman void.
Derick Brassard, who typically plays along the blue-line during the club’s second power-play unit, will move up to take Hoffman’s spot as a right-winger on the first unit.
Zack Smith, who has been used primarily on a checking line with Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Tom Pyatt, could move up to play on a line with Brassard and Mark Stone during even-strength situations.
“In that situation, playing with those guys, there’s a little more responsibility to produce, I guess, as opposed to playing on a shutdown line,” said Smith.
“It’s tough to go in there and replace Hoffman with his speed and shot, but what I’m doing stays exactly the same. Be physical. Get pucks to the net. Make some room for those guys. I’ve done it a bit for the last couple of years, moving up and down the lineup, but I don’t think my game ever changes. It’s always the same. I’m not trying to be somebody I’m not out there.”
Boucher says replacing a suspended player is like replacing an injured player. Some players might be asked to take on a slightly different role — Curtis Lazar will likely play with Pageau and Pyatt on the shutdown unit — but everyone will have to chip in a bit more in all areas to compensate for the loss of one of the Senators’ top scorers.
Hoffman scored a combined 56 goals in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, tops on the team.
The Senators will receive a boost with the return of defenceman Mark Borowiecki following his two-game suspension for hitting Tyler Toffoli of the Los Angeles Kings from behind last Saturday.

As of Friday night, the Senators had yet to announce a recall from Binghamton. Boucher said it was possible he could dress 11 forwards and seven defencemen against the Devils.
