Shafaq News / Kurdistan alliance demanded on Wednesday, Prime Minister, Nuri al-Maliki to dismiss the Vice President for Energy Affairs, Hussain al-Shahristani for "failing" to solve the electricity problem and oil file management.
“What has Shahristani stated that the region is smuggling oil with the help of operating companies there comes to cover up his failure in electricity case,” The leader in Kurdistan Alliance, Farhad Al-Attoshi said in a press conference attended by “Shafaq News”.
The Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, Hussain al-Shahristani considered earlier that exporting oil from Kurdistan Region is "smuggling".
Shahristani accused foreign companies such as Exxon Mobil and Total as "breaching" to the Iraqi laws by Kurdistan government’s contracts without getting the approval from Baghdad government.
Al-Attoshi commented on Shahristani’s remarks,” Mr. Shahristani made us used to the fabricating of crises whenever he fail in equipping electricity to the citizens”.
Several cities in the south of Iraq are witnessing night protests on the deterioration of processing power in summer.
Attoshi who belongs to Kurdistan Democratic Party wondered, "If these oil companies are smuggling oil , why does al-Shahristani deals with them in southern and central Iraq?”.
"This means that Shahristani deals with smuggling companies and he must be held accounted”.
The oil extracted from fields in Kurdistan Region used to be transferred to world markets via Kirkuk - Ceyhan pipeline, which is controlled by Baghdad to Turkey, but the Kurdish exports via that route stopped last year because of a dispute over oil payments.
This dilemma between Baghdad and Erbil, is considered a major obstacle in the plans developed by the two sides to develop discovered oil fields and other exploration during the next few years.
Baghdad says that it has the only right in the management of the country's oil wealth through the conclusion of contracts and export crude, but Kurdistan rejects that and confirms that the Iraqi constitution allows it to sign oil contracts.
Kurdistan was able to attract giant companies to work in its fields, including Exxon Mobil, Chevron Americas, France's Total and Russia's Gazprom despite warnings from Baghdad.
