Clashes erupted between Turkish army, Syrian Kurdish forces

    Posted on April 28, 2017

ISTANBUL,— New clashes erupted on Thursday between the Turkish army and a Syrian Kurdish militia regarded by United States as a key ally in the fight against Islamic State jihadists, reports said.

Turkey says mortar shells fired from an area in Syrian Kurdistan controlled by the Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) hit an army command post in the Akcakale district of Turkey’s southern Kurdish Sanliurfa province, the Turkish Dogan and Anadolu news agencies said.

Kurdish forces accuse Turkey of bombarding the border region of Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava).

YPG responded to the attack that was launched by the Turkish troops on Qerebaba and Tal Hashirky (Tabeh Hashirky) villages in Rajo district. Some reports stated that some elements of the Turkish occupation forces have been killed. An Turkish armored vehicle was wrecked in Firfirk village in Rajo district, ANHA news agency reported.

This was the second day in a row clashes have been reported across the tense border after the Turkish air force earlier this week bombed YPG targets in Syrian Kurdistan.

The US State Department said it was “deeply concerned” that the strikes were conducted “without proper coordination either with the United States or the broader global coalition” against the Islamic State group (IS).

Russia’s foreign ministry on Wednesday meanwhile said Turkey’s bombing raids were unacceptable and called on all sides to show restraint.

But Ankara insisted that Washington and Moscow had been properly informed ahead of time.

Turkey fears the creation of an autonomous Kurdish region in northern Syria that will not be loyal to Ankara — would spur the separatist ambitions of Turkey’s own Kurds.

Syrian Kurdistan’s ruling PYD has established three autonomous zones, or Cantons of Jazeera, Kobani and Afrin and a Kurdish government across Syrian Kurdistan in 2013. On March 17, 2016 Syria’s Kurds declared a federal region in Syrian Kurdistan.
