Waiting on whether to make the call for surgery is once again likely going to leave the Detroit Red Wings without one of their regulars for the start of the season.

Red Wings center Luke Glendening underwent successful surgery Monday on his left ankle to repair tendon damage. The procedure was performed by Dr. Don Bohay in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“The surgery was done to repair an injury he suffered late in the season,” Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Ken Holland said.

Glendening suffered a fractured ankle and partially torn tendons and missed the final seven games of the 2016-17 campaign. His expected recovery time is three to four months, meaning much like Tomas Jurco, who waited into the summer last year before undergoing shoulder surgery, Glendening figures to miss the beginning of the 2017-18 season.

“We hoped he would improve with rest and immobilization, but we decided at this point that surgery was necessary to make sure he is ready for the 2017-18 season,” Holland explained.

    Scouting Meetings

Detroit’s pro scouts will gathering beginning Wednesday in Syracuse, N.Y., where they will watch Games 3 and 4 of the Calder Cup final between the Crunch and Detroit’s top farm club the Grand Rapids Griffins, and begin to formulate plans for the upcoming NHL expansion draft and free agency, as well as explore what trade possibilities might be out there.

“The last two weeks for me has really been about amateurs,” Holland said. “The past week we were in Buffalo all week at the NHL Combine and the week before we had all our amateur scouts in for the year-end meetings and put a list together (for the NHL entry draft). I watched Grand Rapids play three games.”

We were going to have meetings in Detroit. Now all the scouts traveling to Syracuse Tuesday. We’ll watch Games 3 and 4, Wednesday and Friday.

“We have decisions to make on our protection situation and it leads to the expansion draft. I talked briefly to a number of general managers when I was in Buffalo. Everyone was focused on interviewing the kids. This week I will get on the phone and talk to a few more teams. I\ll try to talk to all of the teams in the next week to 10 days.”
