Even if his numbers didn’t indicate it, Petr Mrazek kept saying his game was coming around, that it was getting better.

Saturday, his performance agreed with his words.

The Detroit Red Wings goalie made a season-high 42 saves for his first regular-season shutout in nearly a year as the Wings blanked the Nashville Predators 1-0.

“He stood on his head tonight,” defenseman Mike Green, who tallied the game’s only goal in the first period, told reporters. “He made some big saves in key moments of the game and he’s continuing to get better here.”

Mrazek, who entered the game with a goals-against average of 3.20 and a save percentage of .894, insisted he felt like his game was coming around in January and so far in February, he is 2-0, his first consecutive wins since Dec. 4-6.

“It feels great, my first shutout of the year,” Mrazek said. “But what I said a day ago, even (after their) 5-4 (win over the New York Islanders), the most important thing is we bring home two points.

“Yeah, I feel great. That’s all I can say about it.”

Detroit coach Jeff Blashill, himself a former netminder, sensed Mrazek, whose previous regular-season shutout was a 3-0 win over Florida on Feb. 8, 2016, was on from the moment he made his first save.

“Right from the onset I looked at Petr and thought, ‘That’s the Petr I know’ when he’s got tons of confidence and looks big in the net,” Blashill said. “I thought he was excellent tonight right from the get-go.”

    Not Jim Dandy
While Mrazek was stoning the Predators, Jimmy Howard struggled mightily in his first appearance of a rehab assignment with AHL Grand Rapids.

Facing Milwaukee - curiously enough, Nashville’s farm team - Howard surrendered three goals on the first eight shots and five goals on 29 shots over the course of his performance in a 5-4 loss.

“It was tough out there, especially with reads,” Howard told MLive.com. “You can practice but as soon as you get into a game with all that motion out there, it was a real battle.”

It was Howard’s first game action since he suffered a knee injury Dec. 20 at Tampa Bay.

    Everywhere There’s Shuffling
The Toronto Maple Leafs claimed defenseman Alexey Marchenko on waivers from the Wings. Marchenko saw his first NHL action while Toronto coach Mike Babcock was still coaching the Wings.

Meanwhile, center Frans Nielsen (upper body injury) did not play Saturday, returning Tomas Jurco to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 25.

“Until I get a further update from what I understand it’s day to day,” Blashill said of Nielsen. “I feel badly for Frans but I’m not worried about the guys we don’t have. I worry about the guys we do have.”

For the first time since Jan. 4, one of the guys the Wings did have was defenseman Brendan Smith, back from a knee injury, and Blashill felt that was a real boost to his club’s beleaguered rearguard.

“Brendan, when he’s playing his best hockey, is a real good player,” Blashill said. “He’s a real good defenseman in the league when he’s playing his best hockey. The biggest thing for him is making sure he manages his game, that he manages the puck well, that he manages his positioning well so he’s not giving up opportunities. But he’s physical, he’s a skater.

“He adds skating to our D corps. And he’s a guy who wants to shoot the puck and join the play. So I think he can do lots of good things for us.”

Niklas Kronwall sat out to make way for Smith.

“Actually, Kronner is day to day as well,” Blashill said. “It’s a lower body (injury).”
