[ltr]"The province will announce its independence from Spain in a matter of days," said Carles Bigdemont, head of the Catalan government.[/ltr]
[ltr]"His government will work at the end of this week or the beginning of next week," he said in his first press statement since the referendum on the secession of Catalonia.[/ltr]
[ltr]At the same time, King Felipe VI of Spain attacked in a televised speech the organizers of the referendum on the independence of the province of Catalonia, saying they had placed themselves "outside the law."[/ltr]
[ltr]Felipe said the situation in Spain was "very serious" and called for maintaining unity.[/ltr]
[ltr]Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Catalonia in protests against Spanish police violence last Sunday during a vote on the referendum, which killed some 900 people.[/ltr]
[ltr]Bigmont said his government "will take action at the end of this week or the beginning of next week," in reference to the Declaration of Independence.[/ltr]
[ltr]Asked what options he would use if the Spanish government intervened and seized control of Catalonia's government, Bigemont said it would be "a mistake that would change everything."[/ltr]
[ltr]Bigmont pointed out that there is currently no communication between the government in Madrid and the territorial government[/ltr]
