The storm hit the US coast as a first-class hurricane with winds of up to 140 kilometers per hour, threatening areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama with heavy rains and floods.

Knight killed about 30 people in Central America before entering the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and reaching land in the southern United States.

The authorities changed the warning from the hurricane in New Orleans to a tropical storm warning.

The national meteorological agency said the hurricane warning was still in force on the Gulf coast from Louisiana to the Alabama border and Florida.

The National Hurricane Center said that "Knight" approached the mouth of the Mississippi River at 4 pm, the US Central Time, moving northwest at 37 kilometers per hour.
