[ltr]British Prime Minister Theresa Mae on Thursday named Gavin Williamson as defense minister instead of Michael Fallon, who was forced to resign on Wednesday after a sexual harassment scandal.[/ltr]
[ltr]The May office, in a statement, announced the appointment of Williamson, 41, who has so far been charged with imposing parliamentary discipline in the Conservative Party during the vote in the Westminster Parliament.[/ltr]
[ltr]Mae's quick step to replace Fallon came after she said on Wednesday she would take action when allegations backed by evidence of sexual misconduct appeared.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I am very clear that I will take action against those who have allegations of misconduct backed by evidence."[/ltr]
[ltr]In a letter of resignation sent to the prime minister, Fallon said: "There have been many allegations about members of parliament in the past few days, including some on my previous behavior."[/ltr]
[ltr]"Many of these were false, but I accept that I was in the past below the high level we require for the armed forces that have been honored to represent them."[/ltr]
[ltr]Fallon was featured in a newspaper article this week, in which he said he had hit a radio announcer in 2002.[/ltr]
