Belgium is considering Madrid's request to hand over the president of Catalonia

A spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor's office told AFP on Friday that the judiciary will "study" the European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish judiciary against the president of the province of Catalonia, Carles Pochimone. "We will study it and hand it over to an investigating judge," spokesman Eric van der Seibet said. "The Spanish judiciary issued an arrest warrant on Friday against Pochimoun and four of his" ministers "in Belgium.
The investigating judge issued the arrest warrant against the five, accused of "rebellion, incitement, misappropriation of public funds and disobedience of the authority," according to a statement issued by the court, which on Thursday arrested eight other members of the government in Catalonia.
The developments coincided with the announcement of the President of Catalonia, who said Friday, from Brussels, "his willingness to run" to the elections of 21 September in Spain, even if forced to carry out his campaign from abroad. "I'm ready to run, I want to be a messenger for my compatriots," he said in an interview with Belgian television RTVF. He also stressed the need to get from Madrid "an obligation to abide by the outcome of these elections."
"I will go to court, but to the real judiciary ... I have asked my lawyers to inform the Belgian judiciary that I am fully prepared to cooperate," he said during the interview.
