Uncertain fire .. obsession chasing shorja traders daily

    Baghdad / Amer Muayed

The Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the investigation into the causes of the fire of the Shorja commercial market in Baghdad has continued, and revealed that a number of civil defense employees were injured as a result of the large fire caused by the burning of perfume. Fire retardant packaging materials impeded control of the incident during the hour of occurrence.
A fire broke out Saturday morning in a commercial building in Baghdad's Shorja market. The fire came one day after another fire broke out in the same market.
Firefighters continued to support the Iraqi army's mechanisms in their attempts to extinguish the fire for more than 3 days, which negatively affected the commercial movement in the market, which is an important center for the import and distribution of goods to all Iraqi provinces.
The director of the Civil Defense Information Col. Jawdat Abdul Rahman said in an interview with "Al-Mada" that "on the 23rd of this month, a fire broke out in the Qadisiyah complex in the Shorja area, which consists of five floors."
"The fire caused damage to other buildings close to the Qadisiyah complex, the building of Qashtini," he said, stressing that "many obstacles affected the work of civil defense."
"There are about 27 civilian defense brigades and their forces were near the incident, in addition to other mechanisms of work," he said.
"The preliminary results indicated that the fire came because of the outbreak in buildings filled with stores of perfume and clothing, which made the fire is increasing intensely," adding that "the other buildings that broke out in the fire that followed the first incident came because they are also full of clothing stores."
On the reasons behind the delay in controlling the fire and extinguishing it within hours of its occurrence, he stressed that "there are many excesses in the buildings that caused the fire, which made the fire extinguishing very difficult quickly, and most of the buildings in which stores of sandwiches" This has impeded the work of civil defense in putting out the fire. "
He explained that "the convergence of buildings and the overcrowding of the market is also an impact on the movement of civil defense vehicles, making it more difficult to introduce large mechanisms supporting the work of the elements of fire."
For his part, Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan said in an interview for "Al-Mada" that "there is a committee that was formed in order to find out the causes of the incident, including officers in the criminal evidence and have not yet given the main cause of the fire."
"Some of the members of the civil defense have been injured as a result of their entry into places where there has been an increase in fire," Maan said.
One of the shorja traders said that the huge fire caused the suspension of commercial transactions for more than 3 days, pointing out that a number of suppliers of goods have resorted to the storage of their materials in the public streets for fear of being accused of fire burning in more than one building in the market.
"The fire has stopped working in Shorja, which is the economic center of the capital for more than three days," said Ali Muayad, a commodity trader in Shorja, of Al-Mada.
"The problem with the continuation of the fire is the lack of buildings where the fire engines were standing at a distance and through which the fire hoses were extended," Moayad said.
He pointed out that "the continuation of the fire caused many traders to throw the objects of their stores in the street because of fear of the fire for a long time."
Khalid Ibrahim, another trader for Al-Mada, says that "
But Ibrahim said, "But the next morning everyone was surprised by the outbreak of another fire did not know the reasons in another building close to the scene of the incident."
Ibrahim said that "by asking one of the officers of the matter confirmed that there can be another fire but an effective act, but it was not announced because of the existence of a special investigative committee."
The Shorja market is one of the most important commercial centers of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. It is the most important and important Baghdad commercial facilities, which are very busy and active from early morning until evening, and one of the most extensive and attractive markets for the most vulnerable.
