[ltr]Jordanian monarch King Abdullah II and Pope Benedict XVI called on Tuesday to respect the status quo in Jerusalem during a meeting to discuss developments in the situation after Washington recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.[/ltr]
[ltr]King Abdullah stressed that Jordan's historic and legal status should not be compromised, stressing that Jordan "will continue its historical and religious role in protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem."[/ltr]
[ltr]He also stressed the need to intensify efforts to protect the rights of Palestinians, Muslims and Christians in the city of Jerusalem.[/ltr]
[ltr]The Jordanian monarch said that the American decision constitutes a violation of international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy, since the status of Jerusalem "must be settled within the framework of a comprehensive solution to achieve the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.[/ltr]
[ltr]For his part, Pope Francis, who expressed his concern over the American decision, stressed that Jerusalem is "a unique and holy city for the followers of the three religions."[/ltr]
[ltr]He called on the Pope to respect the status quo in Jerusalem, in line with the relevant UN resolutions, and to avoid further violence and tension.[/ltr]
[ltr]Pope Francis also referred to Abdullah II's role in the protection of Jerusalem's holy sites, praising Jordan's commitment to peace and stability in the region and the world, Petra reported. Ending 29/34[/ltr]
