    Follow-up / Sky Press:

A reserve fund controlled by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been squandered by a series of missile and nuclear tests and expensive projects, the Telegraph newspaper reported.

"Kim has removed his legacy from his father, a fund dedicated to running the country, since he took office after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in 2011," two Chinese sources with ties to North Korean officials told Asia Free Radio.

The sources said Pyongyang's last-minute decision to attend the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February was part of a broader plan to support Pyongyang's failed economy.

"Because of the heavy expenditure of Kim Jong-un, he carried out the fund he inherited from his father," one source said.

The source claimed that he was "well aware" of officials from Bureau 39, a secret government body charged with obtaining the foreign currency of the ruling elite in North Korea through illegal activities. "I have heard these officials concerned about the insufficient funds in the office, many times".

Although the size of the North Korean leader's money fund is unknown, Kim Jong-un has conducted four of six nuclear tests in North Korea and has conducted more ballistic missile tests than his father and grandfather combined, including testing the country's first intercontinental ballistic missile.

Analysts in the South Korean government estimated Pyongyang's spending on nuclear testing at 1.1 to 3.2 billion US dollars.

According to the newspaper, the leader of the North Korea, spending to boast about projects such as lifting the buildings of the neighborhood "Riomyeong Street" in the capital Pyongyang, and luxury ski resort, "Macryong," which claims the critics of North Korea as a project can not be a country in distress to pay its financial expenses, Also, most of the workers in the project were children. "

Another North Korean source said North Korea had decided to participate in the Olympic Winter Olympics to improve relations and seek material sympathy from its southern neighbor.

"North Korea's interest in its neighbor South has secret intentions, which is to exploit the participation in the Olympics to solve its growing financial difficulties," he said.

In the 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century, South Korea followed the so-called "sunshine policy" that the North was betting on. Seoul offered financial aid to improve inter-Korean relations.

While Pyongyang's talks with Seoul were widely welcomed in January, analysts are still wary of over-optimism about a post-Olympics security debate after the North Korean leader insisted on keeping the Alert "to strike the enemy with a devastating blow
