Newspaper: Sistani rejected a petition to postpone the elections
The son of supreme leader Mohammad Reza al-Sistani, has received a delegation from the United Nations, the newspaper "Al-Akhbar" quoted political sources as saying on Saturday, referring to the movement led by the United Nations in Iraq, to pressure the various forces to postpone the date of the elections.
"The delegation asked Sistani to give his cover for such a step, but the response was categorically rejected, which is interpreted by those sources adherence to the Constitution and the timing of the Constitution, first, and its effective presence at the heart of the political process, second.
"Najaf hopes that the elections will be an opportunity to cause a breach in the political structure and to be the starting point for any change that may occur in the next stage," she said.
The Iraqi Supreme Federal Court issued a decision to hold the parliamentary elections on the date scheduled for 12 May next according to the provisions of the Constitution and not to postpone.
