The percentage of women in the workforce in Iraq does not exceed 13 percent, according to the latest statistics issued by the Ministry of Planning.
In a statement to "Al-Sabah", a responsible source in the Ministry of Planning confirmed that the statistics available to the ministry estimate the percentage of working women at about 13 percent of the total workforce in the country.
He added that the ratio of women to men, according to the estimates and statistics of the Ministry of Planning, is 49 percent.
For its part, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs confirms that Iraqi women have earned their rights and status in the workplace. In this regard, the Director General of Social Protection for Women, Dr. Atour Al-Moussawi, says: There is a disparity in the percentage of working women in the government and private sectors, despite the low percentage.
Regarding the role of international organizations in supporting working women, Al-Moussawi explained that these organizations look at all countries with one eye, and do not take into account the social circumstances of countries and their specificities.
She added that competition in the private sector tends to favor men, who usually own capital, while businesswomen - if they exist - are mostly a front for male capital.
For his part, economic expert Mustafa Akram Hantoush explained that one of the reasons for the low percentage of working women in Iraq is that most sectors are more suitable for men, especially the industry, agriculture, trade and transportation sectors, and they are now ineffective, which forces men to resort to administrative and office work, and compete with women who prefer such work.
Hantoush added in a statement to "Al-Sabah" that Iraq suffers from a decline in production in general, which is reflected in attracting workers, stressing that if the productive sectors are activated, it will be positively reflected in the percentage of the workforce in general, and women in particular.
He noted that the military constitutes a large percentage of jobs in Iraq, in which women represent a small percentage that may not exceed 1 percent.
In turn, Professor of Sociology at the College of Arts, Dr. Abdul Wahid Mishaal, told "Al-Sabah" that the prevailing culture in Iraq is moving towards the government sector, as it includes privileges and job stability, which provides them with social security.
He added that the most prominent reasons behind the low percentage of female workers in Iraq are the nature of Eastern or Arab society, which ensures care for women and meets their needs even in advanced stages of life, unlike Western society, which forces young men and women to rely on themselves after reaching a certain age, which prompts females - like males - to search for job opportunities to achieve their financial independence and provide the necessities of life.
