BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The central government and the Iraqi delegation participating in the Kuwait conference for the reconstruction of Iraq bear the responsibility of tying the country to new debts that have been exhausted for many years, the committee said on Friday.
"The Kuwait conference was held for the reconstruction of Iraq and not to be burdened with new debts, as the money was due to be donated to Iraq, but today we are surprised that a lot of money was allocated to Iraq as loans," MP Harith al-Harthy told Al- .
"Iraq is steeped in debt, and the Kuwait conference has increased the proportion of debt owed by Iraq, which will be burdened for years," he said.
"Today's concerns are that the money is going to the wrong hands," he said. "There are a lot of spoilers who are trying to exploit them, especially with elections nearing to fund and support their election campaigns."
Al-Harithi said that "the central government bears the responsibility of delivering the money to the right hands and disbursing the projects after receiving them from donors and lenders to Iraq."
