[Asharq Al-Awsat] Ankara has announced that it will not object to the entry of Syrian troops into Afrin, if its goal is to purge it of Kurdish fighters, threatening to continue the offensive in the region if Damascus tried to protect Kurdish units.
"We welcome the Syrian forces if their purpose is to purge Afrin of terrorism," Javishoglu told a joint press conference in Amman with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, commenting on reports of Syrian forces entering Afrin on Monday (February 19th). "To protect the Kurds, no one can stop the Turkish forces."
"If the Syrian regime forces enter the region to cleanse the region of terrorism, this is good, and if it is going to intervene to keep the Kurdish terrorist groups, we are against this entry," he said.
He continued: "We are clear from the outset, the process of olive branch aimed at ending the terrorists and the Kurds."
"We support the territorial integrity of Syria, and there is full understanding with Jordan in this regard," he added.
The Syrian news agency "SANA", earlier in the day, said that "Syrian popular forces will reach the area of Afrin during the coming hours to support the steadfastness of its people in the face of aggression by the Turkish regime forces on the region and its population since last month."
On 20 January, the Turkish army and the Free Army factions supported the operation of the "olive branch" against the US-backed Kurdish People Protection Units in the northwestern city of Afrin.
