Recent developments in Syria indicate that direct confrontations between Iran and Israel have already begun on Syrian soil, according to the New York Times.
"The first round of this confrontation was in February, when Israel announced the shooting down of an Iranian aircraft that entered its airspace," wrote writer Thomas Friedman.
The Israeli army spokesman Ronin Manlis, then, that the plane was launched from the airport, "Tifor" Syrian in the province of Homs, and was intended to carry out an attack on Israel.
The Israeli air force responded by launching a raid on the Syrian military "Tifour" airport, which resulted in the deaths of seven Iranian soldiers, according to the agency "Tasnim" Iran.
"For the first time, we see Iran doing something directly against Israel, not through its agents," an Israeli military source told the newspaper.
"It was the first time that we were carrying out a live attack on Iranian targets, whether installations or individuals," the source added.
