Austrian media have revealed that a number of Austrian citizens, including women and children, are being held in Iraqi prisons after being proven to be involved in terrorist operations in Iraq .

"Despite the elimination of the so-called Al-Qaeda organization, it has left a heavy legacy of dozens of fighters held in Iraqi jails, including Austrian and German nationals," the Austrian daily Der Standard reported.
"I have seen the official documents of the Iraqi government reveal the presence of these people in those prisons, while the Austrian and German diplomats pursue their cases as holders of nationalities of the two countries."

The return of these detainees to Austria and Germany is a "thorny issue" and the authorities are reluctant to return them because of their terrorist past and the existence of widespread popular opposition against their return.

According to the newspaper, the two countries prefer to keep their detained citizens in Iraqi prisons and follow up their affairs there instead of being transferred to Austrian and German prisons.

The newspaper pointed out that "the presence of women and children among the detainees," while at the same time acknowledged the difficulty of determining the number in prisons.

The Austrian newspaper revealed that an Iraqi sentence to execute a German citizen involved in fighting with "Daash" was finally replaced by life imprisonment after the intervention of the German authorities.

"313 people of Austrian nationality joined a militant organization to fight in Syria andIraq, 55 of them were killed there, while 94 returned to Austria," the constitutional protection and anti-terrorism body, the highest security body in Austria, said .

The Austrian security service pointed to "the existence of 1400 people inside the country, pledging the terrorist organization through recordings broadcast through social media."
