The tension in the Gulf has reached its peak, but the Iranians and the Americans are saying together and in the mouth of the highest authority that the war will not erupt and that they are not willing to fight it. Why do the leaders of Tehran and Washington maintain their calm?
The options currently in front of all parties range from going towards a great confrontation, and between opening up the back channels of dialogue.
But during US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's recent visit to Baghdad, an Iraqi official source told the BBC that the US minister, along with his warnings, had brought Iraqi officials a message to the Iranians inviting them to sit quietly at the table.
The official source, who requested anonymity, that Iraq plays a role in trying to calm tension in the region and try to reach a kind of understanding, although such an understanding does not appear soon.
Perhaps the knowledge of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, the existence of hidden channels of communication between the Americans and Iranians is what prompted him to announce that there is no desire of Washington and Tehran to go to war.
Abdul Mahdi said on Tuesday that the United States and Iran do not want war, pointing out that Iraq is in contact with both sides, and trying to ease tensions between them.
In parallel with the Iraqi effort, a plane belonging to the Qatari Emiri Diwan was spotted in Tehran on May 11. According to flightradar, the A320 Airbus A7-MBK landed in Tehran at 7 pm Saturday and left at 10:30 am to Doha.
The next day, the newspaper Iran Times reported the visit of the Emir of Qatar to Tehran, but an official Iranian source denied to the BBC that the Emir of Qatar had visited Tehran during the past few days. However, this does not negate the fact that a prominent Qatari figure was in Tehran that evening, and based on the special relationship between Doha and Washington and Tehran, the exchange of other messages may have been received through the Qatari channel without confirmation.
The events are accelerating in a way that the Middle East has not experienced in years. Iran seems to be not dealing with the American threats seriously, while Washington is making a great effort to confirm what it says, and between these and that the world is waiting either to hear the news of the first meeting or the echo of the next message.
