[size=45]BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's prominent politician Mithal al-Alusi on Monday revealed the "reason" that led Iraq to not link to the oil tanker held by Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
Al-Alusi said that "the tanker seized by Iran was actually Iraqi, but the government denied its return to it, because it fears the confrontation with Tehran, and there is no personality in the three presidencies able to do so.
"Iran-backed parties have militias that control the Iraqi authorities, so the tanker went with oil as a gift to Iran without any price," he said. "Baghdad did not speak anything and was just denying it."
The Iraqi oil ministry denied its relationship with a ship seized by Iranian authorities on Tuesday, and Tehran said it was Iraqi.
Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said that the ministry does not export gas oil to international markets, but shorten the export of crude oil and declared oil products, according to the contexts and mechanisms and controls universally recognized.
Jihad added that the concerned authorities are collecting information about the detained tanker, stressing that this tanker is a small tanker that is not handled by the Ministry of Oil in the process of marketing oil and petroleum products.
The official IRNA news agency confirmed that the vessel, held by the Revolutionary Guard, was named "Hita".
The detention was carried out 18 nautical miles from the Persian island of Iran in the Gulf, the agency said.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the arrest of a foreign vessel said it was smuggling Iranian fuel to the Arab Gulf states, and stressed that it will not back down on the restriction of continuing to monitor the waters of the Gulf and to deal with any operations that destabilize the security.
