The US Embassy in Baghdad issued a statement on Wednesday regarding the visit of Assistant US Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker to Baghdad.
"The US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker conducted a visit to Baghdad on February 18 to discuss relations between the United States and Iraq," the embassy’s spokesperson's office said in a statement received.
“Schenker, in his meetings with Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, President of the Republic Barham Salih, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Muhammad al-Halbousi, highlighted the importance of the relationship between the United States and Iraq and the continued cooperation to support a prosperous, stable and democratic Iraq.”
According to the statement, "Assistant Secretary of State Schenker condemned the continuous attacks against peaceful demonstrators who exercise their democratic right to freedom of expression, including their demands for political and economic reform."
Schenker called on the "Iraqi government to put an end to these criminal practices and bring the perpetrators to justice," expressing "its support for the basic democratic right of Iraqi citizens to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression."
He affirmed, "The United States' respect for the important and permanent role of the reference in Iraq."
The Assistant Secretary of State stressed "the strong US partnership with the Iraqi security forces that safeguard and enhance Iraq's sovereignty and help achieve our common goal, which is to defeat extremist terrorist organizations such as ISIS."
