On Thursday, the Ministry of Planning announced its directions to achieve spatial development, reconstruction of the border strip, and the development of urban and rural settlements located within this strip, through the revival of the cities that were abolished in the eighties of the last century.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said in a statement seen by Al-Eqtisad News that “The Minister of Planning, Khaled Battal Al-Najm, approved the study prepared by the Department of Regional and Local Development, which includes defining the procedures and steps required to achieve the border strip reconstruction plan, through Re-creating the districts and sub-districts that were abolished in the governorates of Basra, Maysan, Wasit and Diyala.
And that "the ministry called on the aforementioned governorates to provide them with the requirements of the creation, for the purpose of studying them in accordance with the approved planning standards, among which are the fundamentalist approvals by all the relevant authorities, attached with them the maps and profiles of the administrative units to be created, as well as a feasibility study that includes the requirements for the creation and its purpose." ".
He pointed out that "there are a number of districts and sub-districts that were canceled or demoted in 1989, including Mandali district in Diyala governorate, Al-Shehabi sub-district in Wasit governorate, Al-Tayeb sub-district in Maysan governorate, and Al-Sweib, Al-Baaji and Al-Sibah sub-districts in Basra governorate."
He added, "This cancellation has caused an exacerbation and deterioration of the urban conditions in the border strip areas, which have many capabilities and many comparative advantages, and the damages that these areas faced as a result of the wars that caused the displacement of their inhabitants."
And the Ministry of Planning decided to create districts and sub-districts in four Iraqi governorates.
The ministry decided, according to a document seen by Al-Eqtisad News, to create many previously canceled administrative units, including (Mandali district in Diyala governorate) and sub-districts (Al-Shehabi in Wasit, Al-Tayyib in Maysan, and Al-Sweib, Al-Baaji, Al-Sibah and Al-Bahar in Basra governorate).
