{Local: Al Furat News} The Ministry of Agriculture warned, on Tuesday, of a "fatal drought" during the current summer season, calling for urgent action by the Iraqi government to negotiate and political and commercial pressure on the Turkish side to obtain water dues for Iraq.
The ministry's spokesman, Hamid Al-Nayef, told {Al-Furat News}, "There is a decrease in water levels, both on the Turkish side, which did not have serious answers in releasing Iraq's water dues. There is also a decrease in the levels on the Iranian side, which cut off the water from Darbandikhan completely and completely." Small Zab by 75%, stressing that "the movement is still not at the level required of the Iraqi side in this area."
Al-Nayef stressed, "These decreases are real and realistic, and there are fears not only of the ministry, but all of the Iraqi people about the decrease in quantities of water," expressing his fear, "When we notice in Diyala, the alarm has sounded, as many power stations, as well as water stations for the residents, have stopped." Therefore, these decreases are real, and there is no question of conspiracy or artificial matters. "
He stressed that, "The government today has to take a political dimension in this direction because the technical side is not enough in negotiation," noting that "we cannot leave the Ministry of Water Resources alone, and it must enter the political dimension, and if it fails, the commercial dimension enters."
Al-Nayef pointed out the volume of trade exchange with Turkey, stressing the need to use it as a means of pressure, especially since there is 70% of the water that we receive from the Turkish side, while we get from the Iranian side a water level of about 20%, so the largest percentage is from Turkey where you can "This percentage is to save Iraq through negotiations, but unfortunately the negotiation movement is still a bit and does not meet the ambition."
He added, "Today we are on the verge of summer, which threatens a fatal drought. Yes, the Ministry of Water Resources fulfilled its obligations to prepare the summer plan and gave us all the cultivated areas because it has water storage, and this indicates that the Ministry of Resources was able to rationalize water and benefit from it during this situation," noting Until "the Ministry of Agriculture, even in the winter plan, is concerned that if this situation continues as the same, the water levels will decrease."
He added, "Last year, the summer plan was normal, but this year it decreased from what it was in 2020 by about 100 thousand dunams. This is a natural thing in harmony with the lack of water levels. Therefore, what we care about today is the restoration of the situation and the start of talks and rapid contacts by the Iraqi government with the countries." Whether Turkey or Iran, as well as Syria, in order to obtain our water dues. "
