Today, Thursday, the Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, confirmed that urgent and immediate measures will be taken in Diyala province to address water scarcity, while the date for the start of talks with Iran has been set.
The Ministry of Resources stated, in a statement received by the National News Center, that “Al-Hamdani inspected the Darbandikhan Dam in Sulaymaniyah, accompanied by a number of general directors in the ministry and the region.”
According to the statement, Al-Hamdani said, “Our visit to Darbandikhan Dam to see the rehabilitation and maintenance work by the ministry’s cadres for this important strategic project and to discuss the water resources situation with the region with the aim of unifying positions and future visions to start talks with neighboring Iran in the near future, especially after the significant decline in The water revenues of the Darbandikhan Dam, which feeds from the Sirwan River, which reached 0 m3, is a matter of concern to the Ministry.
He added, "Climate changes have cast a shadow over the world and the region from reduced rains and less snow cover, which led to a lack of water imports in the upstream and downstream countries, and according to international norms, damage must be shared between upstream and downstream countries in cases of scarcity and flooding."
He continued, "The ministry, in coordination with the regional government represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, has organized water releases from Darbandikhan Dam for the purpose of budgeting and preserving the largest amount of storage remaining in the dam for the subsequent seasons."

He revealed, “The ministry is taking urgent and immediate measures in Diyala governorate to address the water scarcity in it, which has been affected by the low levels of water in the basin of Darbandikhan and Hamrin through the implementation of important projects, including feeding the liquefaction plants in Diyala governorate by extending pipes from the bottom of Khalis project to the Khuraisan River "In Baquba, with a record period of time to deliver water to the liquefaction plants, as well as digging a group of wells in the filtration of water far from surface water sources."
The minister assured citizens in Diyala Governorate and the whole country that "drinking water is fully secured, as is water for irrigation of orchards and the provision of water rations for the agricultural plan for the current season."
According to the statement, the minister conducted a “tour of the dam’s facilities for a direct and close field examination, and held a meeting with the staff working in the dam to find out the latest maintenance and rehabilitation work,” instructing “to find quick and effective solutions to it.”
