     Baghdad: Najla Al-Khalidi

Iraq retained for four new years the membership of the Intergovernmental Council to return cultural property to its original country or return it in the event of illegal appropriation.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, said: "Iraq won again the membership of the Intergovernmental Council to return cultural property to its original country, during the elections that were held on the sidelines of the 41st session of the UNESCO General Conference."
Archaeologists promised this victory as international support for Iraq's efforts to recover its cultural property, which has achieved continuous successes in the process of recovering it.
Iraq recently managed to recover a 3,500-year-old cuneiform tablet that turned out to be "stolen cultural property" that was fraudulently introduced to the US market.
In turn, Director of Nasiriyah Museum, Sajjad Abdul-Hussein, said: "This victory enhances the efforts of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture to restore more cultural properties, which are cultural treasures that no country can abandon."
He stressed that "Iraq's efforts to recover its looted antiquities have tipped its weight to win the membership of the Intergovernmental Council to promote the return of cultural property to its original country."
He added, "This step limits illegal acts in archaeological sites that are constantly exposed to theft led by organized mafias that trade in Iraq's antiquities, and represents an international warning message to countries that have not shown serious cooperation in returning antiquities and property."
