{Local: Al Furat News} The Ministry of Water Resources has resumed work on one of the most important projects in Iraq, the Makhoul Dam, after it was suspended for more than 30 years, due to the Saddam regime's invasion of Kuwait. The dam will contribute to generating electric power and serving agricultural lands in the northern governorates, as well as easing the burden from the Mosul Dam and Samarra Dam.
After its approval by the Ministry of Planning, Water Resources began constructing the Makhoul dam and completing the old project, according to the Director General of the General Authority for Dams and Reservoirs, Majid Ibrahim Salman, who confirmed that "the ministry insists on completing the work on the dam and completing it through its three companies," noting that "the contract will be with The same company that designed the dam in the 1990s, and it will be completed in the coming years.”
Salman indicated, "Preparing excavation works and building a housing complex for workers, in addition to rehabilitating the service bridge that contributes to the crossing between the two banks of the Tigris River," noting that "the dam will connect the borders of Kirkuk and Salah al-Din Governorate in the Makhoul Mountains, and at a distance from the bottom with the confluence of the Zab." The Tigris River in the Al-Fatah area, and the dam will work, in addition to using it for storage purposes and in the production of electrical energy, to reduce the pressure of the water that goes towards the Samarra Dam, and add additional control over water drainage,” explaining, “The ministry seeks to restore work in the near future in the discontinued Badush Dam.” It is the back end of the Mosul Dam.
Salman considered the work of the dams from a technical point of view "very excellent", saying: "The work in them is in terms of operation and maintenance around the clock, especially in the Mosul Dam, where grouting continues to add a high degree of safety to its foundations," noting that "the Mosul Dam is fully secured." It is working at full capacity and has no technical problems at the moment."
He noted that "the decrease in the water revenues of the Tigris River after the establishment of tens of dams by Turkey and Iran on the river and its tributaries, and the lack of rain water, and the negative repercussions that may result, increased the need to build dams in Iraq," noting that "it is not possible to build dams in the regions." It has specific places according to specialized technical studies.
