Al-Maliki's coalition talks about political steps that precede the election of the President of the Republic
Shafaq News/ The State of Law coalition led by Nuri al-Maliki did not rule out, on Friday, that a consensus would occur between the Kurdish political forces on a candidate for the position of President of the Republic.
The deputy of the coalition, Muhammad al-Sihoud, said in a statement to Shafak News Agency, that "the features of the personality of the president of the republic are not clear," after the decision of the Federal Court and the upcoming session of the Iraqi parliament to reopen the nomination for this position for the third time.
And he added, “We are waiting for the decision of the Iraqi parliament and the opening of the nomination door in a session tomorrow, Saturday, and we are also waiting for the Kurdistan Democratic Party and its candidate for the post of President of the Republic, and the political consensus between the latter party and the National Union for this position.”
Chihod also indicated that there is a possibility that we will witness a Kurdish consensus among the parties on a specific figure for the position of President of the Republic.
And the representative of the State of Law coalition continued, saying that "national stability requires us to wait for the results of opening the door for candidacy, and the agreement between the Democratic Party and the National Union, and after that we will have an opinion and a decision regarding the candidate for the position of President of the Republic."
The Kurdistan Democratic Party had announced the candidacy of the region's Interior Minister, Riber Ahmed, for the position of the presidency of the Iraqi Republic, to enter into competition mainly with the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the current president, Barham Salih, whose candidacy sparked differences between the two parties.
The Democratic Party says that the Union nominated Saleh for the position without the consent of the rest of the Kurdish forces, which prompted him to put forward a candidate from his side to fill the position.
According to the political custom followed throughout the previous sessions, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the position of President of the Republic since the overthrow of the previous regime in 2003.
But in terms of numbers, the fact that the Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the recent legislative elections, compared to only 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, may reverse the equation this time.
