Al-Azm calls for the inclusion of a legal amendment “amnesty and accountability” on the agenda of the parliament session
Shafaq News/ The Resilience Alliance, which consists of the "Resolution and Resolve" coalition, demanded, on Monday, the inclusion of a legal amendment of general amnesty, accountability and justice on the agenda of the parliament session scheduled for next Wednesday.
The coalition said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, "These two laws have a direct impact on the rights of citizens and are an urgent necessity at this important and sensitive time, which requires solving problems and enhancing citizens' confidence in the political process, especially residents of areas affected by the war on terrorism who have been exposed to difficult circumstances."
He explained that "the delay in the amnesty law and the amendment of accountability and justice caused a state of great frustration, and therefore we call on the presidency of the Council to take into account this urgent need and meet our request based on the request of our public and our regions and work to proceed with the legislation of amendments to these two laws."
And on Saturday (March 7, 2022), the Iraqi parliament received the first draft law in its current session, which includes a broad amendment to the general amnesty law that was approved in the country in 2016, and it was considered at the time that it was emptied of its content, due to political disputes.
The draft amendment to the law, known as the general amnesty, was submitted by representatives of the "Sovereignty" coalition, the main political representative of the Sunni Arab forces led by Khamis al-Khanjar.
At the end of August 2016, the parliament approved the general amnesty law, after long political disputes. However, parliamentary blocs considered that it had been emptied of its content, after deleting a number of articles and paragraphs related to reviewing the file of the convicts and the conditions of their trial.
