Work continues at Al-Faw port... and an official expects to open it in early 2025

Baghdad/ Firas Adnan
The Ministry of Transport and Communications confirms that work in the Faw port is progressing at an accelerated pace, denying the halt or delay of works, pointing out that its opening by receiving the first ship will be in early 2025, while the Ministry of Planning confirmed the imminent launch of a financial payment for the implementation of the projects built on it.
The Director General of the Iraqi Ports Department of the Ministry of Transport, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said that "the Ministry of Planning recently conducted a field tour of the Al-Faw port project, which had more than one goal, the first of which was to see the progress of work and the percentages of completion." Al-Fartousi added, "There are five projects that are currently underway, and we have officially launched the process of driving the pillars on the sidewalks, which is an important transition."
He pointed out that "paving operations behind the sidewalks have reached 100 m, and they are made with space and stones, according to what is designed for it."
Al-Fartousi stressed that "works will continue until the full completion of the project," and he spoke of "a visit to the CEO and deputy director of Daewoo a few days ago to agree with him regarding amending plans in order to speed up work in the Faw port to shorten time." He explained, "The pace of work has become escalating for all to the beholder, follower and specialist," noting that "some trolls in troubled water have spoken wrongly about the failure of work in the Faw port project."
Al-Fartousi stressed, "The project is progressing at an accelerated pace, with real completion rates, and we believe that it will see the light at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025, with the reception of the first ship docked on the five berths."
Al-Fartousi went on to say that the completion rates in the container yard amounted to 18.5%, while the Faw port was linked to the tunnel and the implementation of the first layer with a width of 45 m, a height of one meter and a length of 51 m.
For his part, Director General of Sectors in the Ministry of Planning, Muhammad Nassif, who made the visit to the port, said that “the actual completed work exceeded the plan by 3%,” stressing that “the current completion rate is about 28.5%.”
Nassif continued, "The Ministry of Planning is required to provide the necessary financial allocations for the project, which is supposed to be within the budget law for next year." He pointed out that "there are some $382 million worth of work done, and if the procedures are completed, these funds will be released as soon as possible." Nassif concluded, "The Al-Faw port is one of the important projects for the Iraqis, and great efforts are being made to complete it as soon as possible from all relevant authorities." The former representative of Basra, Wael Abdel Latif, said in a previous interview with (Al-Mada) that "the great port of Faw was planned in 1985, because Iraq was preoccupied at that time with the war with Iran, and then it was postponed."
Abdel Latif added, "A complete investment file was submitted in 2003 when I was the governor of Basra from a British company, with an Egyptian firm." He pointed out that "the local administration at that time wanted to give Basra a project worthy of it, and that was the great port of Faw."
Abdel-Latif stressed, "This project has been punished by a number of heads of government, none of whom has taken a decision on it, as if the issue did not concern them." And he noted, "Some political forces are disrupting the major port of Faw in favor of the Kuwaiti side, Iran, the Emirates or Egypt."
Abdul Latif finds that "these politicians prefer these countries to the interests of Iraq," noting that "it was intentionally disrupted since 2003 until the present time."
He believed, "With the continued presence of these effective and influential political forces, the Faw port will not be completed, especially after it was reduced from 108 berths to 90 berths, and the rest of it has not been completed."
Abdel-Latif continues, "The competent authorities have been preoccupied with the breaking waves that neither advance nor delay, as if the one who wants to build a house begins with the fence, and does not lay the foundation for it."
Abdel Latif concluded, “The Ministry of Transport, whose formations are considered to be five ministries, has been run by unrelated figures, and this had a clear impact on the failure to complete the Faw port.”
