Baghdad / Obelisk: The drought that Iraq suffers from hit the Darbandikhan Dam, making about 69% of the dam’s reservoir empty, but a paradox was made by the rains, as areas in the capital Baghdad and a number of provinces were flooded. Heavy rains, Saturday, (November 12, 2022), caused The flooding of most of the city’s streets, in the first heavy rainfall in Baghdad in the winter season
The director of the Darbandikhan Dam, Saman Ismail, told local agencies and websites that about 69% of the reservoir is empty, and the rate of water entering the reservoir in the current month of November is about 10 cubic meters per second, while our water expenditure is equivalent to 28 cubic meters per second. .
The Alvand Dam reservoir is witnessing a decrease in water reserves by 11 million cubic meters compared to last year.
As for the Hamrin Dam in Diyala, it contains the least amount of water in its reservoir.
Haditha Dam is the second largest dam in Iraq and the Middle East in its contribution to the generation of electric power, in addition to flood prevention and its contribution to organizing and irrigating the cultivated areas in the Euphrates Basin.
The acute shortage of Iraqi dams portends a real catastrophe that awaits the Iraqis, at a time when warnings are rising of a lack of rain in winter due to climate change.
The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Rashid, said that Iraq needs 13 billion dollars for land reclamation, 12 billion dollars for building dams, and 3 billion dollars for developing water resources.
And on Saturday, the resources announced that the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers had risen after the rainy wave, but Iraq lacked the mechanisms that make it store water and benefit from it later.
